Mukuru Shujaa is a community-based organization rooted in the heart of Nairobi’s informal settlements. We are committed to creating opportunities for children and youth to thrive—regardless of their background. Our mission is to nurture young people through play, learning, and leadership development, empowering them to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
To empower children and youth in marginalized communities by providing access to play, education, and leadership development, enabling them to realize their full potential and contribute positively to society.

Mukuru Shujaa drives community development by specifically addressing SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education), primarily through the use of sport for development initiatives.
We run programs designed to respond to the specific needs of children and adolescents living in informal settlements:
Play: We facilitate structured and unstructured play activities including sports, art, dance, and creative games that help children build social skills, relieve stress, and develop emotional intelligence.
Learn: We support academic achievement through after-school programs, literacy and numeracy workshops, digital learning hubs, and school partnerships that boost learning outcomes and encourage school retention.
Lead: We equip young people with leadership and life skills through mentorship, peer support groups, youth dialogues, and community engagement initiatives. This helps them build confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of identity and purpose.
At Mukuu Shujaa we believe that access to quality education enables children to realize their full potential, as a result we give children a chance to play, learn and thrive through social emotional learning integrated into sports and civic education.
