Improving learning readiness and wellbeing of children affected by adverse
childhood experiences in Kenya
Today 1 out of 5 adolescents in Kenya has at least 4 forms of adverse childhood experiences. For an underserved community like Mukuru kwa Njenga the prevalence is higher. This affects their learning readiness and wellbeing leading to low education achievement.
At Mukuu Shujaa we believe that access to quality education enables children to realize their full potential, as a result we give children a chance to play, learn and thrive through social emotional learning integrated into sports and civic education.
We believe that one day, all children will have a chance to experience a positive childhood
To use sport and education to provide safe spaces where children and youth can learn life skills, develop leadership capacity, and grow into responsible citizens.
We use play as a powerful tool for healing, expression, and social connection. Through sports, games, and creative activities, children in underserved communities find joy, build friendships, and develop essential life skills like teamwork, discipline, and resilience.
We provide educational support and access to learning resources to help children overcome barriers to education. Whether through tutoring, literacy programs, or digital learning, we empower young minds with the knowledge and confidence they need to succeed in school—and in life.
We nurture leadership by giving children a voice and the tools to make positive choices. Through mentorship, peer-led initiatives, and community service, we help them discover their strengths and become agents of change in their communities.
At Mukuru Shujaa, impact is measured not just in numbers—but in stories of transformation, moments of joy, and dreams awakened. Every program we run is rooted in the belief that children, when given the right environment, can rise above their circumstances and lead meaningful lives.
Over the years, we’ve seen play restore confidence, learning unlock potential, and mentorship ignite leadership. Here's a glimpse of what your support has helped us achieve:
Every donation, volunteer hour, and shared story fuels this impact. Together, we are building a generation that is empowered, resilient, and ready to lead.
Mukuru Shujaa pioneered the use of sports as a powerful tool to foster cooperation, build self-esteem, and promote physical and environmental well-being among young people in Mukuru Kwa Njenga and its surrounding communities. While the organisation has since grown and expanded its range of activities, sport remains at the core of Mukuru’s identity and programming.
Mukuru Arts Project uses music, dance, theatre, puppetry, and acrobatics to communicate vital information to the community. The project focuses on establishing well-organised arts activities for Mukuru youth and community members, while harnessing the power of the arts to educate young people and the wider community on sexual and reproductive health awareness.
The Lead Programme is designed to recognise and reward Mukuru members with education support for their active participation in both sporting and non-sporting activities. Members earn points toward leadership awards through the successful completion of d
Operating within the Mukuru informal settlement, Mukuru Shujaa is a grassroots, community-led organization committed to improving the lives of children and youth through sport, education, and mentorship. Our approach is holistic and impact-driven, intentionally aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 4: Quality Education.
Beyond the playing field, Mukuru Shujaa supports learning through mentorship, exposure programs, and life-skills education. We provide academic encouragement, career guidance, and experiential learning opportunities that expand young people’s horizons and increase school retention. By connecting youth to learning institutions, role models, and real-world experiences, we actively promote SDG 4: Quality Education.
We use sport—particularly football—as an entry point to engage children and youth in a positive, structured environment. Through regular training sessions, tournaments, and community leagues, we promote physical fitness, mental well-being, discipline, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles. Sport also serves as a safe space for dialogue on critical issues such as mental health, substance abuse, gender equality, and positive life choices, directly contributing to SDG 3.
Mentorship is at the heart of our work. We intentionally mentor both boys and girls, nurturing confidence, integrity, resilience, and leadership skills. Through one-on-one and group mentorship, youth are guided to set personal goals, develop self-belief, and take responsibility for their choices. Many of our mentors come from the same community, making them relatable role models and proof that transformation is possible.
