Mukuru Shujaa Announces Strategic Partnership with Gifted Hands to Empower Youth Through Fashion, Beadwork, and Sustainable Creativity
Nairobi, Kenya –
Mukuru Shujaa is proud to announce a transformative partnership with Gifted Hands, a Nairobi-based fashion and arts organization dedicated to nurturing creative skills, promoting self-reliance, and supporting community-based artisans. This collaboration represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to empower youth in the Mukuru informal settlements through creative learning, skills development, and economic opportunity.
At its core, this partnership is about equipping young people with creative skills they can use to thrive personally, socially, and economically.
Beadwork Workshops: Creativity as a Catalyst for Growth
Beginning this holiday season, youth enrolled in Mukuru Shujaa’s programs will participate in hands-on beadwork and artisan skills training facilitated by Gifted Hands. These workshops will be offered at our community hub and will run throughout the school holiday periods—times when many children are most vulnerable to negative influences due to lack of structured activities.
Participants, aged 10–20, will learn how to design and craft a variety of handmade beadwork items, including:
- Jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, earrings)
- Decorative crafts
- Accessories such as keychains and ornaments
- Custom pieces for events and special occasions
The workshops will not only teach practical, income-generating skills, but also instill values of patience, attention to detail, entrepreneurship, and pride in cultural artistry.
An Innovative Path Toward Program Sustainability
One of the most exciting aspects of this partnership is its built-in sustainability model. Finished beadwork pieces will be marketed and sold locally and through partner networks, with a portion of the proceeds reinvested directly into Mukuru Shujaa’s programs. This social enterprise approach provides:
- A supplementary stream of funding to sustain and scale our education, mentorship, and sports initiatives
- Real-life entrepreneurship exposure for the youth participants
- Community ownership and visibility for the creative work being done
“We are excited to work with Gifted Hands not just because of their expertise in fashion and crafts, but because they understand the power of creative expression in building confidence and economic opportunity,” said [Insert Name], Director of Mukuru Shujaa. “This partnership enables our youth to learn valuable skills, while also helping us as an organization to think more sustainably.”
Gifted Hands: Merging Artistry with Empowerment
Gifted Hands is led by a team of artists and social entrepreneurs who have trained hundreds of young people across Kenya. Their mission aligns perfectly with Mukuru Shujaa’s vision of a world where every child has the opportunity to play, learn, and lead.
In addition to delivering the beadwork workshops, Gifted Hands will:
- Provide materials and starter kits
- Train Mukuru Shujaa youth facilitators to sustain the program
- Guide product development and pricing
- Assist with branding and showcasing youth-made products at local markets and exhibitions
“Our goal has always been to use art as a vehicle for change. Working with Mukuru Shujaa allows us to bring this mission to a community full of untapped potential. We’re not just teaching skills—we’re inspiring a mindset shift,” said Collins Ojwang- Founder.
Looking Ahead: A Future Woven with Hope
This partnership is just the beginning. Over the next year, Mukuru Shujaa and Gifted Hands will explore expanding the program to include:
- Fashion design and tailoring workshops
- Digital marketing and e-commerce training
- Youth-led exhibitions and creative showcases
Together, we are creating spaces where creativity meets purpose, and where underserved youth gain tools to lead fulfilling lives.
