Founder and Executive Director’s message on the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
On the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
By Collins Otieno Ojwang, Founder and Executive Director – Mukuru Shujaa
Sport is one of the most powerful tools we have to transform lives, build communities, and create opportunities for young people.
Across the world, sport continues to unite people, promote healthy living, and contribute to sustainable development. It has the unique ability to break down barriers, foster inclusion, and inspire hope—values that are at the heart of building peaceful and resilient societies.
Here in Mukuru, we see this power every day.
For many children growing up in underserved communities, opportunities are limited. Safe spaces are few. Voices often go unheard. But through sport, we are changing that narrative.
At Mukuru Shujaa, sport is not just about playing—it is about building confidence, nurturing discipline, and unlocking potential. It is a platform where children learn to work together, respect one another, and believe in themselves.
It is also a pathway to something greater.
Through our programs, we are using sport to:
- Promote health and well-being
- Support education and life skills development
- Empower girls and young women
- Build leadership among young people
This aligns with a global recognition that sport plays a critical role in advancing development, peace, and social inclusion.
But beyond global frameworks, our mission is local—and deeply personal.
We are raising a generation of young people in Mukuru who are not defined by their circumstances, but by their potential, resilience, and ability to lead.
On this International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, I call upon our community, partners, and supporters:
- Invest in our children
- Support safe spaces for play and mentorship
- Be part of a movement that is shaping future leaders
Because when we invest in sport,
we invest in hope.
We invest in opportunity.
We invest in a better future for all.
