Global Educators Meet Grassroots Champions: Teach For All Alumni Visit Mukuru Shujaa

Mukuru, Nairobi – November 2024

On a bright, energizing day in Mukuru, the humble paths of one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements became the stage for a powerful cross-continental exchange of ideas, passion, and purpose. Mukuru Shujaa was proud to host a delegation of Teach For All alumni, led by Adelina Martey, Director of Alumni in Africa, for a dynamic and heartfelt learning visit.

The group included alumni from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Uganda, and Sierra Leone—each bringing with them a deep commitment to transforming education and advancing equity in underserved communities. Their visit to Mukuru was not just a stop on a tour, but an intentional dive into the lived realities, resilience, and innovative approaches shaping Mukuru Shujaa’s work with children and youth.

A Meeting of Missions

Both Mukuru Shujaa and Teach For All share a belief in the power of people to drive change—especially when it comes to education, leadership, and community development. This visit provided an opportunity for mutual learning between two movements that, though rooted in different geographies, are united by a common mission: to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.

The delegation was welcomed by Mukuru Shujaa’s leadership team and youth mentors, followed by a site tour of our core program areas, including:

  • Youth Football Training & Mentorship Grounds
  • Creative Arts and Beadwork Hub (in partnership with Gifted Hands)
  • Child-Friendly Learning Spaces
  • Community Engagement and Stakeholder Dialogue Forums

A Deep Dive Into Our Impact

The Teach For All alumni were particularly interested in understanding how Mukuru Shujaa has built a community-rooted model of youth empowerment that blends:

  • Play – through organized football and sports development
  • Learn – through structured mentorship, exposure programs, and skills training
  • Lead – by encouraging youth to take initiative in community service and advocacy

They had candid discussions with beneficiaries of our mentorship program, parents, local leaders, and partner stakeholders—including teachers, social workers, and community champions.

“What stood out to me was how deeply embedded this organization is in the life of the community. This isn’t just a program—it’s a movement led by and for young people.”

Global Reflections, Local Wisdom

Throughout the visit, there were moments of reflection that bridged continents. Alumni shared challenges and wins from their own countries—ranging from improving literacy in rural Sierra Leone to launching girls’ education initiatives in Northern Nigeria.

At the same time, they were moved by the innovation and resilience of Mukuru Shujaa’s youth leaders, many of whom have overcome significant odds to now serve as mentors, coaches, and changemakers in their own right.

“The creativity we saw here—especially the blend of sports, mentorship, and skills training—is something we can take back and adapt in our own contexts,” said Adelina Martey, visibly inspired by the day’s interactions.

Stakeholder Dialogue & Future Possibilities

The visit concluded with a roundtable dialogue between the delegation and Mukuru Shujaa stakeholders, where the two groups exchanged ideas on:

  • Sustainability of grassroots youth programs
  • Leadership development in low-resource settings
  • Alumni networks and south-south collaboration
  • Youth voice and participation in community development

This session opened doors to potential collaborations and knowledge-sharing platforms between Teach For All alumni networks and Mukuru-based youth initiatives.

Why This Visit Mattered

For Mukuru Shujaa, hosting the Teach For All alumni was a powerful validation of the work being done every day by and for youth in our community. It reaffirmed that even in informal settlements, world-class impact is possible when vision meets action—and when local leadership is nurtured.

It was also a moment of global solidarity, reminding us that while our contexts may differ, our shared goal of educational equity and youth empowerment knows no borders.

With Gratitude

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Adelina Martey and the entire delegation for choosing to spend time with us in Mukuru. Your presence was not just a visit—it was a gift of solidarity, inspiration, and possibility.

We look forward to building stronger bridges with the Teach For All network and continuing to share learnings that empower youth, amplify community voices, and shape a more just future.
